Description
Up for auction is a fascinating handwritten ledger circa 1794-1831. The ledger belonged to Abiathar Thayer ( 1768-1845) of Attleborugh Mass and linedwith a Boston newspaper
dated 1791
. What’s really interesting is this ledger is researched in full in 1928 by Albert M. Dunham. He wrote lengthy typescript (10pp) of the contents and researched Thayer along with many other individuals mentioned in the ledger.
The entire contents are discussed in his research from the sale of
one gun and bayonet, scabbard
to a credit for
“doing the breastwork”
and charges for house rent, to a
list of items sold and prices in the accounts section circa 1794-1831.
This is just a snapshot of the contents, and probably one of the best Federal era ledgers I have come across in sometime.
Some interesting names mentioned in the ledger are
Lieut. Benjamin Lincoln, Plina Puffer , Col. Thomas Lincoln, Barzillai Eddy
and many more. I really haven’t done much in the area of research on my own. I am sure there are surprises in store for the winning bidder.
The ledger measures
“ 8 x 11 “ and contains 59 double sided sheets of entries.
Condition is good the only issue is the text block is disbound from the leather cover else internally the sheets show foxing and general age toning. As usual any questions feel free to ask.
